Goodwill Industries

Goodwill Industries is a multi-billion dollar
non-profit organization. The operational structure of Goodwill
Industries is formed by dividing the area of operations into regions
consisting of over 2000 retail stores.

The mission of Goodwill Industries

"Goodwill Industries will enhance the quality and dignity of life
for individuals, families, and communities on a global basis, through
the power of work, by eliminating barriers to opportunity for people
with special needs, and by facilitating empowerment, self-help, and
service through dedicated, autonomous local organizations."

Legal Standing vs Public Perception

A common misconception about Goodwill Industries is that it is a charitable organization.
Goodwill Industries does not have any legal obligation to provide any service for free to any person.

A policy of Goodwill Industries which you will not find on their
official website is the requirement for store personnel to refer
requests for assistance to local churches, the Red Cross, or other local
relief organizations.

If your house burns down and you need clothes for your kids, Goodwill Industries will happily sell you what you need.

The Revenue Flow

Goodwill Industries is a self perpetuating entity. Just as
reinvested interest income is to a fund, the revenue flow of Goodwill
Industries serves to allow the continued operations of the organization
and provide funding for expansion.

What is not commonly understood is the type of reinvestment Goodwill Industries uses to ensure the life of the organization.
Goodwill Industries has within each region a main distribution center for donations and a number of retail stores.

The distribution center may employ or even house handicapped
employees. The individual retail stores are an added source of revenue
for the regional distribution center; beyond local operating costs.

The regional distribution center is also the equivalent of the "home
office". The place where managers and employees are hired for the local
retail stores. In some cases, prospective employees are also treated to
a coupon for a free lunch in the distribution center cafeteria.

The cycle I described is important when it is understood that at no
point is revenue expended outside of that required for operations of
the organization.

In addition, Goodwill Industries does not provide anything which is
not available from either the US government or any private or publicly
owned business.

If you wish to help people by donating personal possessions, the
more direct way is to give to a church. If you give to Goodwill
Industries, your donations fund the organization.
